After a few days of tweaking the foreground and background, I am finally satisfied with the results. I like to leave the painting alone for a day or so and then come back with fresh eyes... It's much easier to spot what needs to be adjusted that way. Also, I decided not to include dust in the background (near the trees). Dust is very light and etheral, and will only veil things that are far off in the distance... Those trees are still quite close to the cows and shouldn't be masked by any fuzziness. There will be dust kicked up around the cows' feet, though, but that is the final step in the painting. Now, on to the cows! I've managed to do a fair amount of work these past couple of days. I positioned and sketched in the cows (my husband calls them "the invisible cows"). I'm slowly building up the landscape. It's going good, but there's still a fair amount to do before I'm satisfied. I always like to keep the main subject (or in this case, subjects) for last... That way, I can balance things out and tie everything together. The progress so far. The background trees aren't fully finished... The centre and right hand-side still need some detailing. I've used cooler colours for the backdrop as cool recedes and warm moves forward. I really want to convey the feeling of depth and distance in this painting. |
