Here's a little gift I made for a friend's birthday; it's a turtle box which has a sneaky locking mechanism (perfect for a Scorpio to stash away their little secrets!) It's made of camphor laurel, a non-native Australian tree that is considered a pest due to its growth rate a size. It quickly towers over other species and strangles out the sunlight. It's a shame because this gorgeous wood has lots of potential for carving, turning and cabinet making. The red heartwood is hard, whereas the paler sapwood is quite soft, making carving and turning rather tricky and demanding... But the results are always just so satisfying to behold. Camphor laurel takes a polish beautifully; it's only downside is that it can scratch and dent easily.
