Artist Statement
My love of art began in parallel with my love of nature and its many denizens. To me, they are inseparable. Within nature, I find solace, recharge my spirit and reconnect with who I truly am; through my artwork, I express the peace, wonder and sense of belonging I experience while being there. It is my fondest wish to convey this sense of interconnectedness with my viewers; to partake in the simplicity and nurturing embrace that nature offers to us all.
I strive to keep my artistic style as realistic as possible because I respectfully believe that nature itself is the purest expression of beauty and grace, and extreme manipulations on my part would violate my own ethos. I also believe that a life without pets is missing a key component of what it is to be human. Pets keep us grounded within nature in our ever-changing modern urban world. That is why I enjoy offering my services for pet portraiture. My main mediums of choice are colour pencils and acrylic paints. Because I tend to notice the finer nuances of life, I like to include lots of small details in my projects. I believe they peek the curiosity of the viewers and invite them to explore further, enabling me to convey my message through the subtlety and depth that is nature itself.
My personal work may be based on sketches and/or photos taken while out in nature, as well as intense observations and memory, but its inception always starts with a strong personal feeling or an emotional response; I may experience delight in discovering something new while on a bushwalk, or surprise and awe from spying a shy and reclusive creature, or even perhaps anger and frustration from coming across rubbish strewn in a park. If my artwork reaches out to the viewer and awakens them to the importance, beauty, wonder and uniqueness of nature, then I have achieved my goal.
